Digital Twin-Based Simulation for Predictive Decision-Making in Waterway Logistics

Investigates a Digital Twin for freight routing across inland waterway networks under uncertain, climate-driven water levels. Expert interviews informed three contingency scenarios, modelled in a time-sliced simulation that compares predictive, DT-enabled decision-making against reactive approaches — cutting fuel-related costs by an average of 28% and reducing modal shifts at prediction accuracies of 70–100%. Built on the Port of Twente.
